Hurricane Katia - not again!

No cause for alarm....unless you're Canadian
By Will Collette

Hurricane Katia is a Category 2 storm currently packing winds over 100 mph. Its track looks a lot like Irene's.

But unlike Irene, Katia will probably miss the New England coast by a wide margin - at least that's what MOST of the models say.

GoLocalProv has a very interesting weather page and their storm tracker has a lot of bells and whistles to play with. Unlike most such sites, they provide you with the option to see what all the various forecasters are predicting for a storm track.

All but one of the dozen or so forecast tracks show Katia taking a hard right turn just before the storm cone touches the Mid-Atlantic and New England coasts and then heading due east on its way to Europe.

Except for one model, the one by the Canadian Meteorological Centre, that shows Katia making almost a direct hit on us.

As you can see from the graphic below, their forecast is WAY out of line with all the others.

Very bold of those Canadians, eh?

Chances are their data will start to fall in line with the others since the science of forecasting storm tracks has gotten to be very accurate (less so on storm intensity).
