Animal Spotlight: Argentine Black & White Tegu
Argentine Black and White Tegu
Generally native to subtropical regions of South America, the Argentine black & white tegu can live in dry, sandy environments as well as in forested and open areas. In recent years, though, they have been found as far north as Florida and are considered an invasive species there because they prey on the eggs of native animals like the  gopher tortoise and American crocodile. In addition to feeding on eggs, tegu's have a diverse diet including various insects, fruits, vegetables and even small rodents. At Mystic Aquarium, our tegu primarily eats a variety of fruit once a week and hard-boiled eggs and mice twice weekly.

You Can Help

Spring cleaning is all the rage, but it's a good idea to keep things fresh in the fall as well.
  • Vacuum the coils under and behind your refrigerator - this should be done every three months to ensure it operates efficiently.
  • Mix vinegar, salt and water together to make an ammonia-based cleaner you can use around the house without toxic fumes.
  • Household chemicals should never be poured down drains. Instead, check for local programs that dispose of hazardous waste.
