Has Donald Trump had his Joe McCarthy moment?

FINALLY, the media realizes they don't have to air or publish Trump lies

Chris LambIUPUI

When CBS, NBC and ABC cut away from President Donald Trump’s news conference at the White House on the evening of Nov. 5, they took pains to explain why they were shutting off the nation’s commander-in-chief.

It was a moment that for me, as a journalism historian, carried echoes of the 1954 takedown of another flamboyant populist demagogue, Sen. Joe McCarthy.

Making false accusations

The key reason, the networks explained, was that Trump had made false claims about the integrity of Tuesday’s presidential election. As ballot counting signaled the increasing likelihood that he would lose to former Vice President Joe Biden, Trump accused the Democrats of trying to steal the election from him.

“They’re trying to rig an election, and we can’t let that happen,” Trump said.

The networks’ anchors criticized the president for peddling false claims to support his vanishing hopes for retaining the presidency. So did some of Trump’s staunchest allies.

Your Guide to the 2016 GOP Candidates

Here's how to tell them apart.
For more cartoons by Bill Day, CLICK HERE

The Republicans have a big problem. Their presidential primary contest is beginning to resemble the New York marathon — hordes of contestants as far as the eye can see.

How is a voter expected to choose among them, particularly since virtually all say pretty much the same thing?

To name a few examples, the entire gang of 15 or more politicians wants to cut taxes, roll back the Affordable Care Act, ban abortion, crack down on undocumented immigration, keep gun laws weak, and do nothing about global warming.

They also uniformly despise Hillary Clinton.

As part of my continuing effort to make the world a better place, here’s a brief analysis of a few top GOP candidates. I hope it helps you tell them apart.

Uh-oh, Ricky…you got some ‘splainin’ to do

No one would argue that Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum stands out as being exceptionally, or even nominally, bright. He’s deeply religious. He’s a homophobe. But intelligence?

It’s not his strong suit. Even so, his recent remarks towards Pope Francis surpass even his legendary foot-in-mouth problem.

In an interview with a local radio station, Santorum told the pope to “leave science to the scientists” regarding climate change.
“The church has gotten it wrong a few times on science, and I think that we probably are better off leaving science to the scientists,” he told the pope. “I think when we get involved with controversial political and scientific theories, then I think the church is probably not as forceful and credible. And I’ve said this to the bishops many times when they get involved in agriculture policy or things like that, that are really outside the scope of what the church’s main message is.”
Santorum managed to pull a rare “double irony.” A comment so dumb that it manages to miss the boat in two places at once. It’s impressively dense because:

A) Climate scientists already agree that climate change is real and

B) Francis himself has a Master’s degree in chemistry.

VIDEO: Another 2016 Presidential candidate declares

Former

Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) took his wild-eyed religious persecution complex on the road this week, speaking to several (friendly) news outlets where he outlined his plans for 2016. He didn’t beat around the bush: he wants to run for president and he believes he alone may be able to stop the secular liberals from turning this country into Nazi Germany in short order.

VIDEO: Just when you think they can’t say anything worse….

Rick Santorum Compares Obamacare To Apartheid, Himself To Nelson Mandela
Apartheid is like Obamacare, claims Rick Santorum.
Never one to shy away from insanity, Rick Santorum claimed that his fight against
Obamacare is like the fight Mandela waged against apartheid.
Cartoon by John Darkow, CagleCartoons.Com.

On December 5, the world lost one of the greatest human rights giants in history.

Nelson Mandela spent his life fighting for civil rights and human dignity.

He died peacefully at the ripe old age of 95.

But instead of paying tribute to Mandela, former and perhaps future GOP Presidential candidate Rick Santorum went on Fox News that night and compared himself and the Republican Party to the celebrated world leader.

Rick Santorum compared Obamacare to apartheid.

During an appearance on the O’Reilly Factor, Santorum claimed that his fight against Obamacare is like the fight Mandela waged against apartheid. Apartheid was the brutal system of racial segregation that dominated life in South Africa for decades until it came to an end in 1994. Obamacare, also known as the Affordable Care Act, is the program that provides health insurance options to millions of Americans.

But, Santorum insists that the two are one and the same.

“Nelson Mandela stood up against a great injustice and was willing to pay a huge price for that, and that’s the reason he is mourned today, because of that struggle that he performed,” Santorum said. “And I would make the argument that we have a great injustice going on right now in this country with an ever increasing size of government that is taking over and controlling people’s lives, and Obamacare is front and center in that.”

Here’s the video from the O’Reilly Factor. after the jump.

Riding on the Wrong Track

Stop the world; I want to get off.

I opened my paper the other morning, brimming with the hope and optimism that spring (and spring training) always excites in me, and these are the stories I saw:

- A killer in Toulouse, France had attacked a Jewish school, murdering a rabbi and three young children.

- A dozen police officers in Mexico were ambushed and killed while investigating the beheading of 10 people.

- Florida police claimed they couldn't arrest the self-appointed neighborhood watcher who had shot unarmed black teen Trayvon Martin to death because of the state's "stand your ground" law, which apparently allows people to shoot other people pretty much whenever they feel like it.

Do you sense a trend here, like maybe the world has gone completely bonkers?

Party of God

You wouldn't think it would take Him four shots to pick a winner.

The Republican primaries have been a tough sled for God, the Father of the party. (Well, Republicans claim He is.)
First, Michele Bachmann came to Him and asked whether she should run for president. "You go, girl," He said, or words to that effect. I take her word on that. (Hey, would she lie?)
Then she started campaigning. After Republicans got a good look at her, God said: "Nevermind."

Candidates for Convention Delegates Certified

The slate for the April 24 Presidential Primary is set
By Will Collette

On April 24, Rhode Island will hold its Presidential Preference Primary. For Democrats, the only person on the ballot for President is President Barack Obama.

For Republicans, it’s the current four major candidates: Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul. If things continue as they have been, all four may make it through to April 24. Or not.

Each of the four Republicans, and the President, also will have people who want to be delegates for them to their National Party Conventions. Voters in the Primary will also be expected to pick who they choose to be delegates.

Rhode Island Political Shorts

You can wear a button to vote…If you have an ID…Look who wants to be a Convention delegate…Doreen Costa wants to kill diabetics…Where is Curt Schilling?...Rick Perry might ride again…Orange is his natural color
By Will Collette

You CAN wear a political button when you vote. For a while, it looked like the RI Board of Elections was going to issue a ban on the wearing of political buttons, stickers, T-shirts, hats, etc., by voters when they went into polling places. State law forbids “electioneering” within a certain distance of polling places, and the BOE was considering whether wearing a button saying “Vote for *#&%*” while voting violated that law. Of course, poll workers are not allowed to wear anything that indicates their political feelings, but this new rule could have had some serious repercussions at polling places. Fortunately, the BOE changed its mind and rejected this proposed rule-change.
