Staring down an estimated $1.1 million budget gap resulting from congressional defunding, Rhode Island’s recently merged public media entity is cutting staff — first on a volunteer basis, and later, potentially through layoffs.

Pam Johnston, CEO of Rhode Island PBS and The Public’s Radio, notified employees of cuts in a staff meeting Wednesday. The internal announcement was followed up with a statement published on the company’s website shortly after.

Citing the “significant and painful cut” prompted by the federal rescission package, which eliminated federal support for public broadcasting, Johnston said the company will be offering voluntary buyouts to “most” staff members. If not enough workers take the offer by the Sept. 5 deadline, the next step is organization wide layoffs, according to the email.

Doctors Without Borders calls for dismantling of US-Israel “Gaza Humanitarian Foundation”

Supposed food distribution sites lure hungry people into "death traps"

Jon Queally

The international medical aid group Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) called for the immediate shuttering of the Israel-U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, denouncing the distribution sites it operates as "essentially death traps."

Backing up its condemnation, MSF released a new analysis—titled, "This is not aid. This is orchestrated killing"—which "documents the horrors witnessed" by the group's staff over recent weeks and the deadly failures of GHF, a group conceived of by the Israeli government with the backing of the Trump administration and staffed by private U.S. contractors after the United Nations-run distribution infrastructure, powered by hundreds of cooperating NGOs, was eviscerated by Israel earlier this year.

"Children shot in the chest while reaching for food. People crushed or suffocated in stampedes. Entire crowds gunned down at distribution points," said MSF's general director Raquel Ayora in a statement. "In MSF's nearly 54 years of operations, rarely have we seen such levels of systematic violence against unarmed civilians."

"The GHF distribution sites masquerading as 'aid' have morphed into a laboratory of cruelty," says Ayora. "This must stop now."

Talks resume to end Butler Hospital strike

Butler Hospital strikers put their time to good use

Steve Ahlquist

Butler Hospital healthcare workers say being on strike has not dulled their need to give back to the community. Over the last few weeks, Butler caregivers have donated over 1,400 volunteer hours at food pantries, soup kitchens, community gardens, and shoreline clean-ups. In addition, Butler workers have responded to a dangerous blood shortage across the state.

On July 21, the Rhode Island Blood Center (RIBC) declared a blood emergency as the state’s blood supply dropped below a two-day inventory, far below the required seven-day supply to meet hospital and patient needs. In response, so many caregivers have stepped up that the Blood Center set up a sponsor code on behalf of the union to participate and donate.

"We’re on day 83 of our unfair labor practice lockout - about 12 weeks - the longest lockout/strike in hospital history in this state,” said Ben Dagnan, a mental health worker at Butler Hospital for 23 years. “To give you an update about where things stand, from our perspective: For those who haven’t heard, the hospital gave us their last, best, and final offer a couple of weeks ago, and last week, the membership voted overwhelmingly - 98% of strikers - to reject that last, best, and final offer. We voted to reject because there was some movement, but it still left our lowest-paid workers behind.

“Management says that $18 an hour is enough to survive in this state, but we all know that is not true or good enough.”

The contract Butler Hospital’s parent company, Care New England, offered did not include dietary, housekeeping, or medical records workers. “We have to make sure that everybody gets lifted up, and we go back to work when everybody is lifted up,” said Dagnan.

I asked about the status of contract talks:

“Interestingly enough," said Dagnan, “on Friday, we heard that the hospital was not interested in returning to the table, and then, yesterday, we found out they are. We’re looking forward to meeting with them tomorrow. We’re hoping that Mary Maran [President and COO of Butler Hospital] and Michael Wagner [Care New England CEO] will pay a visit. We haven’t seen them at the bargaining table once in this whole process. They’re welcome to come, and we hope to get something done. We’ve been very clear on what we’re looking for, so we’re ready to get back to the table and get a solution so we can get back to work. That’s what we want to do.”

The Publics Radio health reporter Lynn Arditi reported today that talks have indeed resumed supervised by a federal mediator. Arditi reports that even though the 700 union members voted down Butler management’s July 11 “final offer,” the union and management continued to have “off-the-books” meetings aimed at breaking the impasse.   - Will Collette

DOGE Aims to Embed Agents in All Nonprofits That Receive Federal Funds

Why?

By Zane McNeill , Truthout

The Vera Institute of Justice, a nonprofit dedicated to reform of the criminal legal system, has revealed that Elon Musk’s “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) recently attempted to embed staff within the organization, citing Vera’s prior receipt of federal funds. According to DOGE officials, this was part of a broader plan to install government teams inside all nonprofits that receive federal funding.

“The attempted intrusion by DOGE — a temporary, un-elected and non-Congressionally approved agency — toward the Vera Institute should alarm every American,” Diane Yentel, president of the National Council of Nonprofits, said in a statement.

During a call with DOGE representatives, Vera’s legal team challenged the legitimacy of the request, noting that the U.S. Department of Justice had already terminated the nonprofit’s federal grants, which had totaled approximately $5 million over three years. While the Vera Institute successfully pushed back and DOGE ultimately withdrew the request, civil society advocates warn that the incident is part of a broader campaign to undermine nonprofit independence.

“This action by DOGE sets a dangerous precedent, leaving any recipient of federal funding — nonprofit, for-profit, and individuals alike — vulnerable to the whims of this destructive group. DOGE and The Trump Administration’s professed commitment to free speech and financial efficiency falls flat when their actions selectively target and weaken groups whose missions they may oppose,” Yentel said.

This tactic to control nonprofits could have far-reaching consequences. An Urban Institute analysis found that more than 103,000 nonprofit organizations received a combined $267 billion in government grants in 2021. These figures, based on IRS filings, excluded smaller organizations with limited reporting requirements — highlighting the vast scale of the nonprofit sector’s entanglement with public funding.
