From the Charlestown Historical Society

THE CHARLESTOWN HISTORICAL SOCIETY

JUNE 2020

The summer season is almost upon us. With the 'new normal' dictating our procedures here at CHS, we look forward to having a soft opening on Saturday, June 13th. Please note that we will observe all social distancing rules and use of a face mask at both the Archive and 1838 Schoolhouse.  Temporarily, we will only host Saturday hours, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.  As usual, we are always available by appointment all year long.

You can  reach us anytime at info@charlestownhistorical.org. and find   out more about the history right here in your own backyard at: www.charlestownhistorical.org.

We'd like to thank all of our members and supporters for your recent dues and donations.  As we enter our 51st year as an organization, we are most appreciative of our community who have enabled the CHS to, Learn, Teach and Preserve the history of Charlestown, Rhode Island.

Sincerely,

The Charlestown Historical Society Board of Directors

Coming on June 10th at 6:00 PM - via Zoom
The Third in a Series of Four Presentations on
Illuminating History ...
Slavery and Memory in the Making of          New England History
 By: Dr. Joanne Pope Melish
Please go to the Cross Mills Public Library website  to sign up for the Zoom presentation

Colonial New England became a maritime power primarily by dominating the American slave trade and employing thousands of enslaved laborers  But by 1860, this experience had been virtually erased from historical memory.  Dr. Joanne Pope Melish will explain the facts of this history, how and why a different  triumphal  story took its place, and how erasing the past has clouded our understanding of the present.
