At the Mystic Aquarium

#NoDaysOff

Inclement weather can’t stand in the way of Aquarium's animal care professionals and it can’t stop our Facilities or Water Quality teams either! Their work continues to ensure our animals and their habitats are maintained to our exacting standards.
“Animal care never gets a day off,” said Dr. Allison Tuttle, Vice President of Biological programs. “Mystic Aquarium’s dedicated maintenance and facilities team and our animal care professionals give a 110% no matter what the weather.”

So, how do we prepare for extreme weather?

  • African penguins move inside if low temps or high winds are in the forcast
  • Stingrays in the Ray Touch poolwill be moved inside
  • Water quality and temperatures are closely monitored by trained staff
  • Fish and other food items are prepared ahead of time
  • Vitamins and medications are organized in advance
  • Overnight staff are scheduled and car pools are arranged
  • Facilities staff ensure pathways and exhibits are safe for the animals and staff
Concerned about weather conditions? Guests are encouraged to visit MysticAquarium.org for updates should hours of operations be interrupted due to weather. Tune in to our social media channels for great updates all the time!

ANIMAL SPOTLIGHT:

PTERANODON (tuh-RAN-uh-don)

Roughly translated, this flying reptile's name means "wings and no teeth." From the late Cretaceous period, this pterosaur (flying reptile) had a wingspan of up to 20 feet - that's as long as a school bus! Mainly preying on fish, the pteranodon used its flexible neck and long beak to catch fish, much like similar shore birds do today.
Encounter 12 animatronic dinosaurs - including the terrific pteranodon - in Jurassic Giants, opening this April!

There is no denying it - winter weather is still rearing its ugly head (thanks Punxsutawney Phil!), but that doesn't mean you can't conserve energy, water - and oftentimes money - when preparing for cold weather.
  • Ensure your doors and windows have a secure seal to keep drafts at bay
  • Allow your faucets to drip when temperatures drop to the teens or lower (this helps to prevent freezing pipes)
  • Make sure you know where your shut-off valve is located In the event your pipes do freeze - or even burst
