It Came From Out of the Deep

Spooky season covers your desire for fall activities and scary festivities. Many animals at Mystic Aquarium inspire the monsters in the shadows, but in reality, the only thing scary about these animals is when their wild counterparts decline in numbers. Discover what is coming out of the deep from Mystic Aquarium.

Please Note: Mystic Aquarium's Hours change to 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. starting Nov. 7th.

Juvenile Shark

Cure Your Fears of Sharks

If sharks are one of your top fears, we know the perfect remedy: juvenile sand tiger sharks! Spending time watching sharks at an aquarium can lessen those fear of them, and you will find that the intimidating sand tiger sharks are a peaceful species. At around one year old, the new sharks average 3.7 feet in length and will grow to about 6.2 feet in three to four years, so it is the perfect time to begin watching these sharks grow up at Mystic.

African Penguins

African Penguin Awareness Day

One scary reality is the status of the endangered African penguin. Currently, there are only 10,400 breeding pairs in South Africa, which is a loss of 25% of the population from the last assessment in 2019. These numbers put the penguin populations less than 3% of historical numbers. Since 2005, five colonies have gone extinct, and no colonies have more than 2,000 breeding pairs. Help us increase awareness of these birds on Oct. 9th for African Penguin Awareness Day! You can share our social media posts or create your own!

Field Research Returns to The Deep

Due to Covid-19, field research is postponed or restricted all over the world. After a year-long delay, a research cruise on the RV Auk to Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary occurred! The project, led by Dr. Peter Auster in collaboration with the Sanctuary, UConn, and Boston University, continues a long-term study of seafloor habitats in an area closed to most fishing. This work indicates the large-scale effects of climate change on ecosystems and examines species interactions like predation and competition.

This study was funded, in part, by the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation.

Bog Turtle

Meet the King of Halloween

Meet the Halloween Crab! This crustacean gets its name for dressing up for the season. Unlike most crabs, Halloween crabs spend most of their time on land and only return to the sea for breeding. At night, these crabs come out of their burrows to forage for food in their forest, mangrove swamp, or beach habitats. Find the Halloween crab in the Hidden Amazon during your next visit.
