Looking for work in South County?

Recent job openings for public service jobs
By Will Collette

For comparison, the December statewide unemployment rate for Rhode Island was 4.6%, making Charlestown's rate just slightly higher.

If you are one of the 200 or so Charlestown residents who are out of work and looking for a job, I’ve collected an assortment of recent job postings for work in non-profits or government agencies in South County.

Or maybe you’re looking for a new or better job.

Maybe at some point Charlestown town government will see it as part of their brief to help working people in Charlestown find work. After all, not everyone in Charlestown is a retiree and there really are some constructive things Charlestown could do to help boost employment, DESCRIBED HERE.

But in the meantime, courtesy of a great service, RI Community Jobs, provided by Brown University’s Swearer Center for Public Service, here are some jobs of note.

NOTE: you can sign up to receive a daily e-mail with all the latest listings. I am cherry-picking jobs that are close to Charlestown, but RI Community Jobs lists the entire state plus jobs in nearby parts of Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Let’s start with the Jonnycake Center of Westerly’s search for a new Executive Director to replace departing long-time Director Elizabeth Pasqualini (Westerly Sun profile HERE). Your cover letter and resume should be e-mailed the Search Committee via Betsy Thoman.

Opening Doors for Westerly's Children is looking for a Development Assistant. Send a cover letter and resume including three current and relevant references to Opening Doors for Westerly’s Children, P.O. Box 2955, Westerly, RI 02891

Women’s Roads to Recovery in Wyoming, RI is looking for a substance abuse therapist and an assistant cook – that’s two jobs, not a therapist/cook. To apply, e-mail your resume and a cover letter indicating which position you are applying for, referral source, salary requirements and a list of 3 professional references to theprovidencecenterjobs2@gmail.com.

The URI Foundation is looking for an Assistant Director of Annual Giving. Forward letter of interest, resume, salary requirements, and references to URI Foundation, Attn: Gerri Beagle, HR Manager, 79 Upper College Road, Kingston, RI 02881, gbeagle@uri.edu

The South Kingstown Land Trust is looking for Outreach and Communications staff. Please email cover letter and resume to Search Committee, c/o Julia Landstreet, Julia.landstreet@sklt.org. I’m not sure if this job is still open.

The Frosty Drew Nature Center right here in Charlestown wants to hire a Per Diem Naturalist for Field Studies Program. To apply, e-mail a PDF resume, cover letter, and 3 references to fieldstudies@frostydrew.org.

The Nature Conservancy wants to hire Education and Stewardship Assistants for its Block Island Program. Visit http://www.nature.org/careers to learn more.

Finally, here’s one that’s not in South County, but might be perfect for Faith LaBossiere who conceived Faith’s Folly in Ninigret Park. Bike Newport is looking for a Development Director.

Faith already has experience in getting $267,000 for a bike path that was only supposed to cost $7,000 which is a fund-raising coup! I hope it’s not too late to send a letter of interest and resume to Bike Newport Executive Director, Bari Freeman, bari@bikenewportri.org with “Development Director Position” in the subject line.
