KINGSTON, R.I. – February 3, 2014 – Are you looking for a weekend full of excitement? How about events that also benefit University of Rhode Island students? Look no further than the Big Chill Weekend, Feb. 28 through March 2.

The URI Alumni Association’s premier event has successfully raised more than $1.4 million for student scholarships since its inception. This year’s honorary chairs are Stephen Cunningham ’76, and his wife Laura.

Online Registration is open until Feb. 7, 2014. Information for the following events can be found at:
Big Chill.

The main event, the Blue Tie Wine Pairing, Dinner and Auction, will take place March 1, at 6 p.m. at the historic Rosecliff Mansion in Newport. Tickets are $250 per person. Russell Morin Fine Catering will provide a delectable five-course dinner. Bellevue Wine & Spirits and Newport Vineyards will provide the wine for the event. Enjoy the delicious drinks and dinner in a beautiful setting while placing bids on a number of exciting auction items.

Auction prizes will please the sports fans, foodies, and artists in your life, including four tickets to NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Race, a day at the International Tennis Hall of Fame and Museum in Newport, a beautiful freshwater pearl necklace and a $50 Matunuck Oyster Bar gift certificate.

Looking to get away for a night? You are in luck. Bid on a one-night stay at the Middlebury Inn in Vermont. This stay also includes a tour of the Woodchuck Hard Cidery, apparel from the cidery, pub pints, and even a $50 gift certificate to Two Brothers Tavern. If you are not able to attend the event and would like to bid on items at the auction, absentee bids are accepted until February 26.

Last year, with the help of a successful Big Chill Weekend, the Alumni Association exceeded its fundraising goal by raising more than $90,000. About 175 students who received scholarships are benefiting from last year’s event. With the assistance of the Big Chill Weekend, the Alumni Association hopes to surpass its goal once again in an effort to raise even more money for student scholarships.

During the Blue Tie Wine Pairing, Dinner and Auction, there will be the “Bid for a Cause” event. An auctioneer will take bids for a direct contribution to the student scholarship fund. These contributions are 100 percent tax deductable and will directly benefit the students. Last year, the “Bid for a Cause” raised more than $24,000. Before this event begins, several students will speak about how the scholarships have helped them.

“Catch the Spirit” by attending one of three events around the state of Rhode Island Friday, Feb. 28, which all feature drinks and hors d’oeuvres. Each event costs $40 per person and each will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Bask in the views of the Newport Bridge by attending the wine tasting at Jamestown’s Plantation at the Bay.

You can also check out one of the popular Rhody Ram hangouts, the Mews Tavern in Wakefield, for a beer tasting. The Vanity Supper Club in Providence will feature Signature Rhody cocktails if you are interested in more of a city atmosphere.

There will be a basketball pregame luncheon Saturday, March 1, at 1 p.m. Cost is $35 per person and includes a game ticket. Luncheon attendees will receive a free ticket to the URI women’s basketball game. There is also a lunch only option available for people who already have tickets.
