Representative Magaziner condemned the January 6 United
States Capitol attack and Donald Trump’s pardons for the
rioters, which included those found guilty of assaulting law enforcement
officers.
“Five years ago, a violent mob attacked our nation’s Capitol
and the police officers sworn to protect it,” said Representative Magaziner.
“They did this because they wanted to overturn a presidential election. Their
candidate, Donald Trump, lost that election, so they tried to stop the count
through violence and rob the American people of their voice.

“The rioters punched and trampled police officers, beat them
with sticks and rocks, sprayed them with mace, and electrocuted them with
tasers. Over 170 officers suffered injuries, including broken bones and
concussions. Four officers died by suicide in the months that followed.
Hundreds of Capitol and DC Metropolitan Police officers bravely did their duty
that day and put their lives in harm’s way to protect the building and our
democracy. We must not forget the sacrifices that those officers made, or let anyone
rewrite the history of what happened on January 6, 2021.”

“Mellor is a millionaire foreign agent of Cuba who has spent
most of his life in Florida and has a history of getting arrested for domestic
violence,” said Hodges. “And if you don’t feel like those are qualities that
would lend someone to resent you on the national stage, he is also proud to
have participated in a violent insurrection against the United States of
America.
“And while he has admitted to crimes on television it is
true he was never arrested for any violent acts on the grounds. But while I was
defending the Capitol, the Congress, the Vice President, Congressional staff,
and the lawful transfer of power of the Presidency, Victor Mellor was, at best,
supporting the terrorists that wanted to install an unelected dictator against
the will of the people of the United States.
“Mellor was part of the crowd that punched me, kicked me,
tried to gouge out my eye, crushed me against a door frame, ripped off my gas
mask and beat me in the head with a riot baton. Mellor is proud of his
association with the mob who viciously attacked my colleagues and I, leading to
the deaths of some of my fellow officers and the retirement of dozens more.
Mellor won’t apologize for his association.
“He’ll probably claim he doesn’t support the violence that
day, but that is simply not true. The mob brought and used a lot of weapons
that day: bombs, guns, knives, a sledgehammer, a cattle prod, wasp spray to the
face... you name it, they had it. But I can tell you as a defender of the
Capitol, by far the most effective weapon they used that day was the mob itself
- and Victor Mellor was a proud part of that weapon. For the longest time it
was a couple hundred officers vs. around ten thousand insurrectionists. Their
sheer numbers made everything more difficult and dangerous, and for the first
time in my career I witnessed a police line collapse and my colleagues fight
for their lives.
“But Mellor won’t apologize for being a ‘J6er.’ So yeah Vic,
you supported the violence that day.”
“I’m here because I made it my vow to always speak up about
January 6, to fight and push back against people trying to downplay it,
whitewash it, or flat-out lie about what happened that day,” said Harry Dunn, a
U.S. Capitol Police officer with over 15 years on the job.
“We must hold them accountable, no matter who it was, but
all that accountability went out the window when Donald Trump pardoned the
people responsible for it. Not only did he pardon them; he celebrated them.
He’s giving payments to the people responsible for the worst day of my life.
Vic Mellor has said January 6 was one of the best days of his life, but for
every police officer at the Capitol that day, I can guarantee you, it was the
worst day of their life.
“I said it would be my duty to come out here and always
forcefully push back. Victor Mellor said he wasn’t arrested, but he should have
been. The Capitol was closed to the public that day.
“Any human being who calls that day a great day should
absolutely be ashamed of themselves and absolutely should not be representing
the people of Rhode Island.
“The officers will tell Rhode Islanders about the violence
and chaos they experienced on January 6th, a day Mellor called one of the ‘top
5’ of his life. The riot was a direct assault on American democracy, as Mellor
and the other rioters attempted to overturn a lawful and fair election.”
“The officers who defended the Capitol that day are heroes,
and the rioters who attacked police and attacked our democracy are villains,”
continued Representative Magaziner. “Victo Mellor is one of those villains. He
stormed the Capitol to try to rob Rhode Islanders of their votes. He brags
about participating in one of the most shameful chapters of our nation’s
history.
“Mellor initially lied and said that he did not enter the
Capitol on January 6th, but then, after President Trump’s pardons to all of the
rioters, he changed his story and admitted that he did enter. What else has he
lied about?
“The truth is this: No one who tried to attack our democracy
on January 6th deserves to represent Rhode Island in Congress.”

This statement got me thinking: Either Mellor believes this, and is too stupid to know better, or he is a liar. Either option is disqualifying in my mind, and I saw no reason to amplify his talking points. I left.
