Affordable Housing for Dummies (VIDEO)

Homework assignment before hearing George Tremblay's "research" on affordable housing
By Will Collette

On Tuesday night, at this month's Town Council meeting, Charlestown will be treated to the formal presentation by Planning Commissioner (and CCA Town Council candidate) George Tremblay on why adding more affordable housing in Charlestown is a bad idea.

George learned his lesson after he took flak at his earlier roll-out over his "findings" that affordable senior citizens housing could be prey to sinister – though completely imaginary – hordes of millionaire retirees who want to grab this housing as investments. In his final version, the one he plans to present on Tuesday, Tremblay stripped out those insulting references to rich retirees, although the report is still crap.

Here are facts about Charlestown you WON'T find
in Tremblay's fictional account
I suspect that in addition to the criticism he received for his concocted story, he was reminded by CCA ticket leaders Tom Gentz (Town Council boss) and Planning Commissar Ruth Platner that the CCA's main bloc of supporters are rich retirees and that George was definitely off message.

Even though it was probably Ruth Platner who gave George the idea to tee off on the elderly.

His final report is still garbage because it completely ignored the desperate lack of affordable year-round rentals and the needs of teachers and volunteer firefighters, but nonetheless, George's report adheres to CCA's anti-affordable housing doctrine.

The state law that Tremblay refers to throughout his "research" is a mandate on all RI cities and towns to reach the point where 10% of its housing provides affordable housing opportunities to its cities. I doubt George has ever read the law, or if he did, he didn't get it. Ditto for Tom Gentz. I believe Ruth Platner has read the law backward and forward, but simply chooses to interpret it to suit her antifamily, anti-senior citizen agenda.
