Happy TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY!

International Talk Like a Pirate Day which is celebrated every year on September 19 is, for me, the most important holiday of the year.

Popularized by my favorite humorist and Miami Herald columnist Dave Barry, Talk Like a Pirate Day is a time for serious people to pause, look in the mirror, say “Arrrrrrr!” and recognize what idiots we can be so much of the time.

Around the world, otherwise sane people are dressing up with bandanas, floppy boots, eye patches and life-like plastic parrots duct-taped to their shoulders.

They’re addressing colleagues, friends, their grandmothers and rabbis with a hearty, “avast, ye bloody landlubbers…”

In Charlestown, we've already seen the Charlestown Citizens Alliance GOVERN like pirates, especially with infernal, eternal tax increases, whether the town needs the money or not and down right odd uses of town money for things hardly anyone wants or needs.

Arrrrr!

My sister Lin was the one who reminded me not to forget this important day, noting that I had not yet begun to promote Talk Like a Pirate Day in my normal manner - i.e. start two or three months in advance and push it until people start to scream "ENOUGH, all ready!" She sent me the art work at adorned the top of this page. You can see more of Lin’s collage art by clicking here.

If you want to make your own Talk Like a Pirate Art, there's a new site to help you DRAW like a Pirate. Click here.

To fully appreciate the deep importance of this day, and to learn how to behave in a manner that does honor, go to the official Talk Like a Pirate website. They can help you talk, dress and act like a real buccaneer. I’m also told that on Facebook, you can change your language setting to “English (Pirate).”

In honor of Talk Like a Pirate Day, you must write like a pirate if you want to comment on this article. I’ll not be taking any bilge from you bunghole rats unless you put it smartly to us in proper Piratese. Savvy?
