Animal Spotlight: Lobster Hatchlings
Baby Lobsters
They may look like something you've examined in science class under a microscope, but these tiny organisms are actually baby lobsters hatched from our yellow lobster, Chiffon! Due to her large size, Chiffon potentially will lay over 75,000 eggs. The babies shown here hatched on July 21. Additional eggs have dropped since then. Measuring roughly 3 to 5 cm long, the hatchlings stay at the water's surface for 4 to 6 weeks before dropping to the bottom of their habitat. After the 6 week mark, they will remain very small but will start to look more like a typical lobster.

You Can Help

"Mystic Aquarium is widely known for our facilities that help visitors connect with and care about marine life.  In the field and behind the scenes, we engage in the rescue and rehabilitation of marine mammals, sea turtles and much more.  Equally as important is the protection of ocean treasures. Work done by our Senior Research Scientist, Dr. Peter Auster, and Dr. Scott Kraus from New England Aquarium has been pivotal in identifying amazing and diverse habitats in the Atlantic Ocean that, if protected, would serve as a living laboratory for study, education and conservation for all future generations."
           Dr. Stephen Coan
President & CEO of Mystic Aquarium

Join our efforts to encourage President Obama to designate the New England Coral Canyons and Seamounts area as the nation's first National Marine Monument in the Atlantic Ocean by signing this petition. Do an ocean of good and be part of this historic movement.
