Challenging the Governor's cockeyed approach to Medicaid

By Steve Ahlquist in Rhode Island’s Future
Fitting the facts to suit her corporate sponsors

Two single-payer advocacy groups,Rhode Island Chapters of Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP) and HealthCare-Now, have prepared a report that is highly critical of GovernorGina Raimondo’s Reinventing Medicaid initiative.

The PNHP/HCN-RI report identifies five areas of concern and concludes that “Governor Raimondo has made it impossible” to achieve the goal of developing “a plan to improve the quality of care Rhode Islanders receive and reduce the costs for Rhode Island taxpayers.”

The areas of concern cited in the analysis are:

Primiano gets ousted

Controversial, though popular, Parks & Recreation Director forced out
By Will Collette
11 Jay reading
Jay reading from his new book at the Charlestown Land Trust's
Farmer's Market. Read the review HERE. It's pretty good.
Next Wednesday night, the Charlestown Town Council will discuss the departure of Jay Primiano as Director of the town’s Parks and Recreation Department at a closed-door executive session prior to setting the agenda for the April 13 Town Council meeting.

Sources tell Progressive Charlestown that Primiano, long a target of attack by leaders of the Charlestown Citizens Alliance (CCA Party), has been forced out though the reasons and terms and conditions that have not yet been disclosed.

Primiano is a member of the quasi-union of Charlestown department heads and as such, has some contract and bargaining rights that will have to be honored unless the Council has found some basis to dismiss him for cause. That seems unlikely since there have been no public actions taken against Primiano. One source tells me Primiano signed the separation papers today though I cannot confirm that. Jay has not responded to my request for comment.

Town Department heads were instructed to stay mum about Primiano’s ouster, if not keep it a secret. Yeah, like that's going to happen in Charlestown!

Kingston, RI — Individuals, grassroots groups and towns from the four states adversely impacted by Spectra Energy’s Algonquin Incremental Market (AIM) natural gas pipeline expansion project have formed a coalition to file a Request for Rehearing after the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved the project on March 3, 2015.

The coalition engaged DC attorney, Carolyn Elefant, who filed the request on April 2, 2015, asking FERC to vacate the Certificate.

Bad News for lobster lovers

Lobster growth rates to decline under increasing ocean acidification conditions

Restaurant Lobster animated GIFKINGSTON, R.I. – April 1, 2015 – The growth and molting rates of juvenile lobsters are likely to decrease significantly as the oceans become increasingly acidic from climate change, making the animals more vulnerable to predation and leading to fewer adult lobsters being available for harvest.

Those are the results of a four-month laboratory study conducted by University of Rhode Island doctoral student Erin McLean. “I’m not sure yet what the mechanism is that is affecting their growth,” she said, “but it takes energy for them to regulate the increased acidity, which is energy they cannot then put toward growth.”

In any campaign, you have to plan ahead

Giant Screwup By Ted Cruz Will Make You Literally LOL

The Canadian born Ted Cruz has announced he is officially running for the presidency in 2016, and the hits keep coming.  I’m sure Cruz’s announcement had to have made Bush, Walker and the rest of the GOP clown parade very happy.  He takes crazy to an entirely different level, which would give ALMOST anybody else an edge in the Republican primary.

Seems to me if you are going to be running for President, you, or someone working for your campaign, would have remembered to registered the domain TedCruz.com. Even if Cruz were not running for the highest office one would have thought as a United States Senator he would have registered his own name.  Oops!

Clear your area of anything that could be spilled or spit out as not to damage your electronics before you take a look at what you see when you click on Ted’s name below.

Fair-warning, it’s hysterical.

Final Peeps® push, Narragansetts testify before Congress, Taylor Swift tax and other crazy politics and lots of new job postings

New plate of Charlestown Tapas for the discerning reader
By Will Collette

Things you never knew about Peeps®

Easter is less than one week away. For me, the main reason to celebrate Easter is marshmallow Peeps®, pretty much a forbidden food since I learned that I am diabetic. But it’s great having them around, stale of course, in case of low blood sugar episodes.

Anyway, I am not the only one with Peeps® on the mind, evidenced by all the Peeps® diorama contests (click here and here for examples. The folks at Mental Floss did their part to contribute to our greater understanding and appreciation of Peeps® with this insightful list of “Twenty Delicious Facts About Peeps®.”

Narragansett leader testifies before US Senate

Narragansett Tribal Council member Randy Noka traveled to DC to give testimony before the Senate Indian Affairs Committee on the so-called “Carcieri Fix” on March 25 The "Carcieri Fix" is legislation that would declare the clear intent of Congress that the nation’s laws on the relationship between Indian tribes and the government apply to all tribes, and not just those who have been federally recognized prior to 1934.

Why it's OK for Indiana to make discrimination the law...
